Trekking the 4566m of Mt. Meru can be done in 3 or 4 days. You will climb at a relaxed pace, and will pass through the plains, forests, moorlands, and volcanic desert of this landscape. This mountain is situated within the limits of Arusha National Park, and the package usually includes a game drive, and of course walking safari among the animals with an armed ranger.

Mt. Meru is a great acclimatization climb to do before attempting the summit of Kilimanjaro, with the advantage of being less popular than its neighbour. As a result the lower slopes are densely populated with wildlife and you have a good chance to spot larger animal such as giraffe, antelope and elephant.

Although Meru is smaller than Kilimanjaro, and lacks the glacier covered peaks, the climb is strenuous and quite steep at places. It can also be very cold, so proper mountain gear for camping is necessary, along with comfortable and durable trekking boots.
