There are four distinct safari circuits in Tanzania: Northern, Southern, Western, and Coastal.
The Northern Circuit is the most frequented by tourists likely because many famous Tanzanian sights such as Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and Mt. Kilimanjaro are here. Other attractions include Mt. Meru, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron, Lake Eyasi, Usambara and Lake Victoria. All the parks, towns, and attractions are close to each other, so one can experience the whole circuit via private car, spending only a few hours enroute in between each one.
The Southern Circuit is home to many virtually untouched charms of authentic Africa.
Selous is the largest game reserve in all of Africa, and the Ruaha River is a spectacular site for observing wildlife interaction in the raw.
There are comparatively fewer visitors to the South, which allows the area to hold true to the tenets of eco-tourism, and visitors will enjoy the relative solitude and serenity of games drives here.
The Western Circuit has three national parks within it, and the only controlled place in the world to observe chimpanzees in the wild. The parks are remote, and are reached via airplane and boat ride, a long journey, but worth the effort. Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika are both within this circuit, a true outreach safari circuit. Parks in this circuit are Gombe Steam, Mahale, and Rubondo Island.
The Coast Circuit is so named due to the 800 km of coastline of Tanzania. Destinations decorated with palm trees, grass cabanas and untouched beaches include Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Tanga, Pangani, and the mysterious islands of Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba. Coastal tours offer historical sightsees, beaches, snorkelling, fishing, scuba diving, and Jozani Forest Reserve on Zanzibar, home of the endemic Red Colobus monkey.
